林欣杰在推動藝術發展上始終發揮着自己的小宇宙，他在藝術上的努力及成就讓他獲《透視》雜誌選為 40under40: 全球 40 位 40 歲以下之創意精英。他創作的作品受邀到世界各地多個著名藝術展展出。他同時創作很多電子聲音影像 (audiovisual)，致力把新媒體元素注入具實驗性的電子音樂，曾合輯《香港電氣》、the Dusty City 和 When French Electro Meets Hong Kong，並參與現場演出如「法國五月 ‘06 藝術節」、“Wikimania 2008 Taipei”、New Vision Arts Festival 08、DIGIT@LOGUE 等等。有樂評人曾這樣評他: “不知他手上拿著甚麼樣的奇怪儀器, 卻造出吸引人的音樂和影像” 。
“介紹一下自己？”
K：我是 Keith Lam，林欣杰。我是一位新媒體藝術家。同時間我跟我台灣的拍檔開一家 studio，dimension plus，也是做一個新媒體的創作。我們做很多比較實體的新媒體藝術帶進我們的項目裡面。同時間我們開了一個 lab，讓人們在裡面用我們的機器去創作東西。
“你覺得新媒體藝術是有情感的嗎？”
K：很多人覺得新媒體藝術是冷冰冰的，因為科技對很多人來講是很高深的，遠離我們生活的一種狀態。你看我們的作品都會比較偏向於裝置、實體。我很怕那種沒有人跟人之間的溝通。如果我們的作品有互動的話，你會對某一些東西有概念，比如說擁抱，比如說剛剛我給你看到的那個雕塑，你看到就會覺得是一種很熟悉的東西，在那個熟悉裡面你看到另外一種狀態。這是我跟我團隊所創作的一種理念，我覺得藝術創作跟設計師的工作是一樣，就是人與人的溝通，所以我強調要把人性加在我們作品裡面。
“我們現在在哪裡？”
K：我們現在是在觀塘，觀塘是一個很過癮的地方。因為它是屬於九龍的一部分，同空間有住宅區、商業區、工業區。所有你能搜到在一個城市裡面的區域你都能在這個區域裡面找的到。這邊有非常非常多的工業大樓。同時間在另一個街口你也可以看到非常大的商業大樓。因為他的背景是，香港很多不同的城市都有那種複雜的關係，或是一些住宅、工業。觀塘是會比較偏向於密集的工業區，它以前是有很多工廠在裡面，我們以前說的那種山寨廠，就在這個工業區裡面開始他們的事業，可是後來慢慢會搬到大陸去。我們選擇在觀塘這個工業區裡面作為我們香港的 studio 基地。是因為這裡面我們還是能找到很多原材料，比如說木頭，比如說金屬，包括設計，比如說我們突然間會想到一件作品需要大量螺絲跟木頭的話我們就花個五分鐘，走到街口上面，我們就可以找到所有我們需要的材料。
“如果有人想當一個製作家，第一步是什麼？”
K：我猜任何一個人都可以做一個製作家。只需要你打開電腦就已經可以。我覺得剛開始不一定要在家裡面買一台 3D 印表機。對我來講 3D 印表機沒有很好。也不需要買一台 laser cutter 在家裡面。我覺得單純是從軟體開始慢慢創作，因為網上的資源實在是太多。我們知道單一一個畫面就可以做到最後是怎麼樣。越來越多像我們這種空間，它有那麼多的機器讓別人去用。比如說你已經在學校裡面，學校裡面已經有非常多的資源，只要你願意去試，願意去玩，願意花時間，花一點點一個小時睡覺的時間去玩一下你愛玩的東西的話就可以做到很多很多很過癮的東西。
“你第一件做的東西是什麼？”
K：我自己第一件做的東西，是在我大概 3 歲的時候。因為我爸在一個玩具廠工作，所以我家裡面有超級多玩具。我小時候有台玩具車，裡面有一個小小的馬達在裡面。應該是某一天,我打開一個不知道是什麼的東西，它突然間跑很快。那是我第一個改裝的東西，它屬於我個人的。其他人的都跑的很慢，我的跑得很快。
“你的創作理念是什麼？”
K：我有兩個時段的創作概念。剛開始接觸的時候，因為我背景的關係，會傾向於某一種科技，再塞一個概念進去。我後來有當研究生，然後再教書。對我來講如果一件藝術作品它只停留於表面，又或者這很漂亮，那很誇張。我不是說漂亮是種問題，藝術作品可以非常漂亮，可以非常精緻。可是更重要是為什麼做到這麼漂亮，為什麼你有這樣一種形態在你的照片上面。它應該是有不同的解讀。
“你做了這個“實驗室”，希望從大眾身上得到怎樣的反饋？”
K：現在這個空間對我來講有兩個很重要的期待，現在香港人有一個大的空間是非常困難的，我是很期望如果家裡面不能做到那種東西，可是你超級渴望做到這個東西話，過來這邊然後從事你自己覺得很酷的創作，任何創作都可以。我在這個空間裡面接觸到很多人，他們平常的工作裡面沒有做到他自己想要做到的創作，就會利用到下班的時間過來，又或是週末的時間過來做他們自己的作品。這是我第一個期待，第二個期待裡面包含兩個東西。一個是我想要把那種 maker、DIY 的文化帶到一個專業的領域裡面去，很多人會覺得 DIY 那種就是自己玩一玩的，可是我覺得 DIY 可以是完美的，你可能需要得到一些很好的工具、機器，這邊我們都有。
“你對現在的實驗室的期望是什麼？”
K：香港已經沒有工業，比較可惜是因為以前我們經常提到 “香港製造”，又或是 “香港設計”。現在我們只是在強調設計。可是只有設計沒有製造的話，產品的質量還是會缺失。我懷揣一個夢想是所有東西都可以在我們的實驗室裡面發生，在實驗室裡製造，也是香港製造。
